Body Spells was a collaborative Tattooing project and performance by Angel Garcia and Samantha Rehark. The artists created various schedules aligned with celestial cycles of the day and the moon during which they would simultaneously create two designs in 1 minute or less that they would later combine into a new composition. This design was meant to be a snapshot of a celestial event which would then be turned into a card that was included in a deck of 78 cards. Akin to the tarot, this deck was designed for a querent to select a card from, after which they would be given a reading by Garcia and Rehark. The reading would evolve into a consultation for a tattoo that would be done that same day, tailored specifically to the reading as well as combining Garcia and Rehark’s tattooing styles. A unique combination of handpoked and machined tattooing, these designs pushed ideas of custom tattooing to be more spiritual and spontaneous than is typical.
Accompanying projects included Zodi-Tats. The artists designed flash sheets that acted as tableauxs for every zodiac sign. Clients were able to create their own designs that utilized different colors, energies, shapes, and placements that were specific to each sign.
